In Arabic, Alula means “the first spring”. In Latin it means “winglet”, and it designates the group of feathers that corresponds with the freely moving first digit, a bird's “thumb”, that helps birds take off and land. Alula has inspired plane designs and is also the name of a beautiful region in the Arabian Peninsula. It is also the name of a city in the north of Somalia and the name of a cape, derived from the Somali term “lul”, which means pearl. Alula evokes the crossing of cultures and meanings that we would like to reflect in our multidisciplinary plurilingual project. With Alula we aim to make us question ourselves about the world, how we represent it and how we represent ourselves in it, irradiating multiple possibilities, experimenting, deconstructing and building new connections through words and forms, playing, learning and sharing. She studied two semesters in the UdK (Berlin University of the Arts) and did her dissertation in EINA (Univeritary Center of Art and Design Barcelona). Uriol is an adventurer of color, randomness and pure chance that formalizes her work in objects, paintings, film, illustrations and installations. She has shown her work in many places around the world but mostly in Barcelona, her hometown, and in Berlin, where she lives with her two kids, combining her artistic practice with classes in the University of Barcelona and other workshops. Maria Castelló Solbes, Co-founder of Alula, has a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid, studying her final year in the UdK (Berlin University of the Arts). After that she also enrolled in Art History studies in the Humboldt University for six semesters. In 2007 she moved to Barcelona where she got her Postgraduate Diploma in Creative Illustration in EINA (University School of Design and Art of Barcelona). Since then, she works as illustrator, collaborating with magazines, publishing houses, advertising agencies, design studios, record labels, public institutions and cultural collectives. Back in Berlin since a few years, she combines her illustration work with teaching and collaborations with art curators, editorial investigators, artists and writers. She loves maps, diagrams and florilegia.María currently lives in the Netherlands. Ultrasonic glasses are transparent and very light. When you wear them you can see everything around you in great detail. Sometimes, if you squint, stuff that looked pretty tiny turns big and what at first sight looked hard turns soft like cream or elastic like gum. Well, well, well, looks like with ultrasonic glasses you can discover a new world that has actually always been there but looks a bit stanger than usual.&nbsp; Monkears, as its name suggests, are shaped as monkey ears. Luckily they are also see-through. Otherwise we would crack up every time we put them on and see ourselves looking like that. Monkears are also very important cause they allow us to hear very, very well. That way we can listen to a story, or music or something that our buddy tells us or the teacher. All this comes through our ears and rolls up and down inside our body. To stop all this interior traffic, up and down, down and up, cork plugs are extremely handy. You can’t see them either but when you put them on, everything turns silence. All the fuzz, all the noises and voices disappear and you can slowly start feeling the beat of your heart. En árabe, alula significa el primer salto. En latín álula significa ala pequeña y designa al conjunto de plumas correspondientes a los huesos atrofiados de las manos en las alas de los pájaros que les permite arrancar el vuelo y aterrizar. Alula ha inspirado el diseño de aviones y también es el nombre de una bellísima región en la península Arábiga, de una ciudad en el norte de Somalia y de un cabo, derivandose del término somalí lul que significa perla. En alula resuenan el cruce de culturas y significados de nuestro proyecto multidisciplinar y plurilingüe que a través de la creatividad quiere preguntarse sobre el mundo, cómo lo representamos y nos representamos, irradiar múltiples posibilidades, experimentar, deconstruir y construir otras conexiones a través de las palabras y de las formas, jugando , aprendiendo y compartiendo. En 2007 se mudó a Barcelona donde cursó un posgrado de ilustración creativa en EINA (Centro Universitario de Diseño y Arte de Barcelona). Desde entonces trabaja como Ilustradora, colaborando con prensa, editoriales, agencias de publicidad, estudios de diseño, discográficas, instituciones públicas y colectivos culturales. De vuelta en Berlín desde hace unos años, combina su trabajo de ilustración con proyectos docentes y colaboraciones con comisarias de arte, investigadoras editoriales, artistas y escritoras. Es una enamorada de los mapas, diagramas y florilegios.Actualmente vive en Holanda.
